Last week's release of the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection poses an interesting question - why is the assemblage of Snake's adventures incomplete? While MGS2, MGS3 and Peace Walker are all present and correct, the original Metal Gear Solid is conspicuous by its absence - and what of its Nintendo GameCube remake, The Twin Snakes?
It's this latter release that is the most intriguing. Released in 2004 in collaboration with Nintendo, The Twin Snakes was the original Metal Gear Solid remaster - an alternative take on the classic PS1 game, featuring a bounty of graphical improvements, re-recorded audio with new translations and gameplay elements from MGS2 - such as first person shooting - retrofitted into the original game.
Konami and Nintendo masterminds Hideo Kojimo and Shigeru Miyamoto were said to be involved in honing the gameplay, while Canadian outfit Silicon Knights were drafted in for the main coding duties. As The Twin Snakes was released after MGS2, which did get included on the HD Collection, we couldn't help but wonder.. how would it look rendered in high definition? A remaster of a remaster, if you will.
Emulation on PC can help - up to a point. The Twin Snakes is one of the few games that doesn't really behave so nicely with the Dolphin emulator, but we were able to get it working with a series of settings tweaks and a lot of patience. There are a few graphical glitches and audio is a bit wobbly, but this is an edited sample of The Twin Snakes in HD.
'If you own a Wii or GameCube, The Twin Snakes is well worth hunting down as a complementary purchase to the HD Collection. It's not HD, but it does feature 480p support.'
We can only wonder why Konami decided not to add The Twin Snakes to its Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. The credits do state that the production and copyrights are owned by the company, but it may well be the case that collaboration with Nintendo came at a price - that the game would remain a GameCube exclusive in perpetuity. If you own a Wii, or indeed a GameCube, The Twin Snakes is well worth hunting down as a complementary purchase to the HD Collection. If you're set up with a component cable, you should also be able to run the game in 480p, too: a luxury that wasn't afforded to PS2 owners with Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater.
In terms of the complete absence of the original Metal Gear Solid in the HD Collection, this is a puzzle that's somewhat simpler to address: you just have to look at it. Some games scale up to high definition resolutions nicely, presenting a retro feel but still looking fine when re-rendered at 720p or 1080p. It's safe to say that Metal Gear Solid isn't one of those games - perhaps not surprising when you consider that the game originally launched way back in 1998.
'The original Metal Gear Solid may not have stood the test of time from a visual perspective, but it's still a great game and one of the classics of the late nineties.'
It's telling that, just five years after its PS1 release, Konami felt compelled to remake the entire game for the GameCube. The leap from there to the present day HD consoles is just as immense. In the video above, we've captured the PS1 game with HDMI precision courtesy of the PlayStation 3. Alongside that is the original PC version, running at 1024x768 - as close to HD standard resolution as we could get it (and also, coincidentally, the native rendering res of MGS4). Some framebuffer effects appear to be missing, but we do get the benefits of proper perspective correction, a higher level of colour precision, no stippling effect and actual filtered textures.

While cut-scenes don't really look so impressive, HD gameplay doesn't look so bad and there's perhaps an argument that despite its visual shortcomings in certain areas, it's still a great game - one of the most important titles of its era, in fact - and should have been included in the new Collection in some form. Even bundling the existing PSN download for PS3 owners might have been a nice way of acknowledging one of the all-time greats of the nineties..

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes[a] is an action-adventurestealth video game co-developed by Silicon Knights and Konami Computer Entertainment Japan for the Nintendo GameCubevideo game console in March 2004.[1] The game is a remake of Metal Gear Solid, originally developed by Konami for the PlayStation in 1998.
The Twin Snakes features graphical improvements over the original, new cutscenes written and directed by Ryuhei Kitamura, and gameplay functions originally introduced in the sequelMetal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. The game includes a revised translation with re-recorded voice acting using almost all of the original English voice cast.[2] The game was met with positive reception.

Gameplay[edit]
The gameplay of The Twin Snakes was altered to resemble that of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. While all of the original areas and enemies were kept, new ways for the player to combat them were introduced, such as the ability to shoot from a first-person view.[2] Enemy AI was improved, giving enemy soldiers the ability to communicate with each other and detect the player more intelligently with senses of sight and sound enhanced.[3]
Development[edit]
The Twin Snakes was first announced in 2003 by Nintendo of America, confirming that Silicon Knights would be developing under the guidance of Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto.[4]
Although The Twin Snakes was largely developed at Silicon Knights, Ryuhei Kitamura directed many of the game's cinematics while Silicon Knights implemented them into the game[5] to look identical to those in the original Metal Gear Solid, but upon inspection Hideo Kojima asked Kitamura to redo them in his well-known action style.[6] The game's composition duties were split: some of the in-game music was handled by Steve Henifin and Silicon Knights' music staff, while the rest of the music (in-game, menus and cut scenes) was handled by Konami's music staff, including Metal Gear Solid 2 co-composer Norihiko Hibino.

Voice acting[edit]

The voice acting was re-recorded with the original cast from Metal Gear Solid, except for the role of the Cyborg Ninja. David Hayter, the voice of Solid Snake, persuaded Konami to have the original voice cast reprise their roles.[7] The main reason for the re-recording, according to an interview with Hayter, was because the increased audio quality allowed by the GameCube picked up outside noise from the original recordings that were inaudible in the PlayStation version. In the original game, Gray Fox and Donald Anderson were both voiced by Greg Eagles. However, in The Twin Snakes, Greg Eagles voices only Anderson, whereas Gray Fox was voiced by Rob Paulsen. The revised voice acting is used in Metal Gear Solid 4 during Snake's reminiscence as the English-language voice-recording used in the original game was not recorded in a sound-proof studio.[7][8][9] Mei Ling and Naomi Hunter speak with American accents in The Twin Snakes and Metal Gear Solid 4, whereas in the original Metal Gear Solid, they spoke with Chinese and British accents respectively.[citation needed]

Release[edit]
The Twin Snakes was released on March 9, 2004 in North America. It was originally to be released in November 2003, but was pushed back, along with the other versions.[10] The European date was pushed back several weeks.[11]
In Japan The Twin Snakes was released on March 11 alongside an exclusive Premium Package. The box includes the game itself; a platinum-colored GameCube adorned with the FOXHOUND logo; a 44-page book titled Memorandum containing production notes, sketches and photos; and a GameCube disc called the 'Special Disc' containing an emulated version of the Family Computer version of the original Metal Gear.[12]
Reception[edit]

Much like the original Metal Gear Solid was met with acclaim from critics, The Twin Snakes received an 85.58% and 85/100 from GameRankings and Metacritic,[16][17] respectively. IGN gave The Twin Snakes 8.5 out of 10, praising its superior graphics and likening the presentation to epic movies.[18]GameSpot gave it an 8.2 out of 10 or 'Great' on their scale,[3]Eurogamer rated The Twin Snakes as 8 out of 10 and Gaming Age gave it a 'A-' rating. Game Informer gave The Twin Snakes a 9.25 out of 10, citing its improved gameplay and graphics, and also its faithful retelling of the original Metal Gear Solid story.[19] The publication later placed The Twin Snakes at #11 on their list of 'Top 25 GameCube Games' in 2009.[20]
Despite receiving generally favorable reviews, The Twin Snakes has also drawn criticism. According to GamePro, the game has a 'flagging framerate and bouts of slowdown that occur when too much activity crowds the screen.'[21] The use of new gameplay elements from Sons of Liberty was seen as unnecessary, as GamePro thought that the level design was virtually unchanged from Metal Gear Solid,[21] which 'spoils the challenge.. and completely ruin at least one boss battle.'[22]
