What is a JTAG Xbox 360?The Xbox 360 is a series of home video game consoles manufactured and supported by Microsoft. JTAG stands for Joint Test Action Group, and it's the common name for a standard that would later be officially recognized as IEEE 1149.1. JTAG is a processor capability that supports debugging and other activities, and it also provides the means through which the Xbox 360 and other video game consoles could be modded in order to add features, enhance capabilities, and lift restrictions. Some of the capabilities that a JTAG modded Xbox 360 offers you include:
- Playing games without a CD
- Playing backup copies of games
- Running Homebrew programs
- Installation of any 2.5-inch HDD
- Support for any USB drive or memory stick
Not all Xbox 360 consoles are JTAG-compatible. The console must have a manufacture date earlier than June 18, 2009. Consoles manufactured after this date were physically altered to no longer support JTAG. Additionally, the dashboard software has to be version 2.0.7371.0 or earlier. Even if you have a console manufactured before the cut-off date but had updated its software beyond 7371, JTAG is no longer supported, and that software update isn't reversible. The manufacture date is stamped on the back of the console. To identify the dashboard version:
- Power up: Turn on the Xbox 360.
- Select option: Press the Guide button on your controller and select Settings.
- Select option from menu: Select System Info from the Settings menu.
- Locate number: The kernel number is located in the upper-right-hand corner.
Yes. A JTAG Xbox 360 is backward-compatible with the original Xbox just as the standard Xbox 360 is. In addition, the limitations of the retail emulator are lifted, which means that you can play all Xbox games rather than just those that were officially supported. However, be mindful that some games aren't officially supported because they were never optimized for the emulator and therefore won't run well even on a JTAG system.
